Long-term follow-up after single-incision laparoscopic surgery
Surgical Endoscopy Mar 18, 2019
Barutcu AG, et al. - Researchers examined the frequency of incisional hernia after single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) in long-term follow-up. Further, they sought for factors predisposing patients to this feared complication. They analyzed 286 cases who were operated on using SILS technique for cholecystectomy or appendectomy; 192 patients (67.1%) underwent cholecystectomy; 94 (32.9%) had an appendectomy. Observations revealed a necessity for long follow-up duration in cases with incisional hernia. They noted a higher incidence of this complication in correlation with obesity and pre-existing umbilical hernia. They identified SILS as a safe approach for cholecystectomy and appendectomy procedures following a careful patient selection.
