Long-term effects of repeat hepatectomy vs percutaneous radiofrequency ablation among patients with recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma: A randomized clinical trial

JAMA Dec 08, 2019

Xia Y, Li J, Liu G, et al. - In this open-label randomized clinical trial carried out at the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital and the National Center for Liver Cancer of China on 240 individuals with recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (RHCC), experts contrasted the long-term survival outcomes following repeat hepatectomy with those following percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (PRFA) among individuals with early-stage RHCC. Compared with repeat hepatectomy, PRFA was related to a greater incidence of local repeat recurrence and early repeat recurrence. In comparison with the ablation, surgery had a greater complication rate. In conclusion, for people with early-stage RHCC, in survival outcomes following repeat hepatectomy vs PRFA, no statistically important variation was noted. Moreover, in people with an RHCC diameter greater than 3 cm or an α fetoprotein level greater than 200 ng/mL, repeat hepatectomy could be related to superior local disease control and long-term survival.
