Long-term effects of rent supplements and mental health support services on housing and health outcomes of homeless adults with mental illness: Extension study of the At Home/Chez Soi randomised controlled trial
The Lancet Psychiatry Oct 25, 2019
Stergiopoulos V, Mejia-Lancheros C, Nisenbaum R, et al. - In view of the At Home/Chez Soi randomized controlled trial demonstrating improvement in housing stability and other select health outcomes in correlation with Housing First in five cities in Canada, researchers sought to extend the At Home/Chez Soi trial at the Toronto site to appraise how the Housing First intervention influence housing and health outcomes of homeless adults with mental illness over 6 years. In the phase 1 of the At Home/Chez Soi Toronto study at the Toronto Site, 575 homeless adults (aged ≥ 18 years) with a serious mental disorder with or without co-occurring substance use disorder were stratified by level of need for mental health support services (high vs moderate), and were randomly assigned (1:1) to Housing First with assertive community treatment, Housing First with intensive case management, or to treatment as usual. Of the 575 participants, 197 [34%] participants had high support needs and 378 [66%] had moderate support needs. Participants of phase 1 could choose to enter the extension study (phase 2). Outcomes revealed an enduring positive effect of rent supplements and mental health support services on housing stability for homeless adults with mental illness in a large, resource-rich urban center. They observed a larger impact on individuals with high support needs than moderate support needs.
