Long-term effects of intensive multifactorial therapy in individuals with screen-detected type 2 diabetes in primary care: 10-year follow-up of the ADDITION-Europe cluster-randomized trial
The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Nov 29, 2019
Griffin SJ, Rutten GEHM, Khunti K, et al. – Via performing a 10-year follow-up of the ADDITION-Europe cluster-randomized trial, researchers randomized eligible participants via computer-generated list to provide screening followed by routine care of diabetes (n = 176) or screening followed by intensive multifactorial treatment (n = 167) to authenticate whether variations in treatment and cardiovascular risk factors have been maintained. They also evaluated effects on cardiovascular outcomes. Among individuals with screen-detected diabetes managed in primary care, sustained decreases in glycemia and related cardiovascular risk factors over 10 years were attainable. In the 5 years after diagnosis, the variations in prescribed treatment and cardiovascular risk factors were not sustained at 10 years, yet the variation in cardiovascular events and mortality remained non-significant.
