Long-term all-cause mortality in people treated for tuberculosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Lancet Infectious Diseases Oct 04, 2019
Romanowski K, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the posttreatment mortality among tuberculosis survivors via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. In addition, they examined how demographic and clinical characteristics influenced the mortality risk. They included data from ten studies, reporting on 40,781 individuals and 6,922 deaths, in this work. Outcome analysis revealed significantly increased mortality following treatment among people treated for tuberculosis vs the general population or matched controls. The pooled standardized mortality ratio of 3·76 was observed when restricted to people with confirmed treatment completion or cure. When stratified by tuberculosis type, sex, age, and country income category, similar effect estimates were observed. For 4,226 deaths that occurred posttreatment, causes of mortality were extracted; most deaths were noted to be attributable to cardiovascular disease (20%).
