Long-term adverse cardiac outcomes in patients with sarcoidosis
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Aug 13, 2020
Yafasova A, Fosbøl EL, Schou M, et al. - This cohort study was designed to assess the long-term risk of heart failure (HF) and other adverse cardiac outcomes among patients with sarcoidosis vs matched controls. Using Danish nationwide registries, the selection of all patients age ≥18 years with newly diagnosed sarcoidosis (1996 to 2016) was done and these patients were matched 1:4 by age, gender, and comorbidities with controls from the background population without sarcoidosis. The absolute 10-year risks of outcomes estimated in the sarcoidosis patients vs controls were: 3.18% vs 1.72% for HF, 0.96% vs 0.45% for the composite of ICD implantation, ventricular arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest, 3.44% vs 2.66% for atrial fibrillation or flutter, and 10.88% vs 7.43% for all-cause mortality, respectively. Overall, a higher associated risk of HF and other adverse cardiac outcomes was observed in patients with sarcoidosis vs matched control individuals.
