Long‐term outcomes in patients with mixed aortic valve disease and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction
Journal of the American Heart Association Mar 29, 2020
Isaza N, Desai MY, Kapadia SR, et al. - Researchers undertook this observational cohort analysis to assess long‐term results in patients with mixed aortic valve disease (MAVD; defined by the concurrent presence of aortic stenosis and aortic regurgitation) and cardiovascular adaptations to chronic MAVD. They analyzed 862 adult patients (56.8% male) having preserved left ventricular ejection fraction and at least moderate aortic regurgitation and moderate aortic stenosis. All‐cause mortality was assessed as the primary outcome. Improved survival related to aortic valve replacement [AVR] was revealed in both unadjusted and adjusted Cox survival analysis. Overall, a high risk of all‐cause mortality was conferred by MAVD. However, a significant reduction in this risk was afforded by AVR independently of aortic valve area, symptom status, and after controlling for confounding variables.
