Lifestyle counseling and long-term clinical outcomes in patients with diabetes
Diabetes Care Aug 07, 2019
Zhang H, Goldberg SI, Hosomura N, et al. - In diabetes patients, the connection between lifestyle counseling (identified using natural language processing of electronic notes) in a primary care environment and clinical results was explored by researchers in this analysis. Between 2000 and 2014, hyperglycemic adults with diabetes treated at primary care practices were retrospectively studied. According to results, 10-year cumulative incidence of the primary outcome was 33.0% vs 38.1% for less than monthly counseling among patients with monthly counseling or more. Higher frequency of lifestyle counseling was linked to lower incidence of the primary outcome in multivariable analysis. Among patients with diabetes, more frequent lifestyle counseling was related to a lower incidence of cardiovascular events and death.
