Levels of personality functioning and not depression predict decline of plasma glucose concentration in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Ehrenthal JC, et al. - In patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers evaluated how depression and personality functioning affects glucose regulation. In an outpatient medical practice, 75 adults with a first diagnosis of type 2 diabetes were recruited consecutively. During the first 6 months of a standardized disease management program, levels of personality functioning but not depression predicted a decline in plasma glucose in type 2 diabetes. In chronic diseases that require a high level of compliance and lifestyle change, personality functioning might be particularly important.
