Leucocyte telomere length is no molecular marker of physical frailty in late-life depression

Experimental Gerontology Aug 11, 2018

Arts MHL, et al. - Researchers examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal link between leucocyte telomere length (LTL) as a molecular marker of ageing and the physical frailty phenotype (PFP) as a clinical marker of ageing. They also determined if these links were moderated by the presence of a depressive disorder, since depression can be considered a condition of accelerated ageing. Participants were 378 depressed older patients (according to DSM-IV criteria) and 132 non-depressed older persons participating in the Netherlands Study of Depression in Older persons. Findings demonstrated that LTL was not related to frailty in neither non-depressed nor depressed older persons. According to results, LTL and physical frailty appeared to represent different aspects of ageing.
