Leg length change after unilateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty in varus knee and its clinical implications

Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 30, 2020

Zhao FC, Zheng L, Hui ZG, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate the magnitude of leg length change after the unilateral index unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) in varus knee and its influence on clinical outcomes. Between June 2015 to June 2017, researchers included a sum of 114 patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis who had undergone unilateral UKA and followed up for at least 2 years. They assessed leg length and hip knee angle on full-length standing films before and after the surgery. They assessed flexion contracture applying a goniometer with the patient in the standing position pre- and postoperatively. They recorded and examined HSS scores, pLLD, the occurrence, and time interval of subsequent contralateral knee replacement. It was noted that LLD and pLLD were common in patients both before and after UKA. Ater UKA, most patients displayed leg-lengthening. The data demonstrated that the postoperative LLD and pLLD were not correlated with functional scores but correlated with a subsequent contralateral knee replacement.
