Left ventricular ejection fraction and adjudicated, cause-specific hospitalizations after myocardial infarction complicated by heart failure or left ventricular dysfunction
American Heart Journal Jun 15, 2019
Hall TS, et al. - In this investigation involving 19,740 patients, researchers explored the connection between left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and adjudicated cause-specific hospitalizations following myocardial infarction (MI) complicated with low LVEF or overt heart failure (HF). Non-cardiovascular (CV) was the most common cause of hospitalization. The absolute risk increase in non-CV hospitalizations associated with LVEF <25% in a high-risk population with complicated acute MI was 2/3 of the absolute risk increase in HF hospitalizations and twice the absolute risk increase in MI hospitalizations. LVEF has been an independent predictor of all types of hospitalization and looks as an integrative marker of sicker patient status.
