Left atrial function in heart failure with mid-range ejection fraction differs from that of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: A 2D speckle-tracking echocardiographic study
European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Imaging Dec 07, 2018
Al Saikhan L, et al. - In this study prospectively enrolling consecutive outpatients diagnosed with heart failure (HF) according to current European recommendations, researchers evaluated left atrial (LA) phasic function by using 2D-speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) in patients with HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and HF with mid-range ejection fraction (HFmrEF). Participants were 110 HFpEF and 61 HFmrEF patients with sinus rhythm, and 37 controls matched by age. Findings revealed that regardless of LA size, and independent of potential confounders, HFmrEF patients vs HFpEF patients had worse LA phasic function. Intrinsic LA myocardial dysfunction perhaps in relation to altered left ventricular function appeared responsible for these observed differences.
