Left atrial end-diastolic volume index as a predictor of cardiovascular outcomes: The Heart and Soul Study
Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging Apr 24, 2020
Thadani SR, Shaw RE, Fang Q, et al. - Researchers compared left atrial end-diastolic volume index (LAEDVI) vs left atrial end-systolic volume index (LAESVI) in terms of their predictive power for heart failure (HF) hospitalizations, a composite of HF hospitalizations, myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart disease death, and all-cause mortality. Participants included individuals without atrial fibrillation or flutter or significant mitral valve disease. In these people, LAESVI and LAEDVI were measured. A near 6-fold increment in the hazard ratio for HF hospitalization was revealed on comparing the highest and the lowest quartiles of LAEDVI. This was shown to be higher as compared with what was noted with LAESVI. For the composite cardiovascular outcome as well as for all-cause mortality, similar links were identified. Overall, in ambulatory patients with stable coronary heart disease, cardiovascular events were strongly predicted by LAEDVI, and LAEDVI may merit routine use.
