Laparoscopic versus open umbilical or paraumbilical hernia repair: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Hernia | Oct 19, 2017
Hajibandeh S, et al. - This study sought to compare outcomes of laparoscopic repair to open repair of umbilical and paraumbilical hernias. As per findings, laparoscopic repair of umbilical or paraumbilical hernias seemed associated with a lower risk of wound infection, wound dehiscence and recurrence rate, shorter length of stay but longer operative time. The limited number of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) suggested no difference in recurrence rates. The quality of the best available evidence was moderate, and selection bias seemed the major concern due to non-randomised design in most of the available studies. As per authors, the approach for umbilical or paraumbilical hernia should be based on surgeonÂs experience, clinical setting, patientÂs age and size, hernia defect size and anatomical characteristics.
