Laparoscopic appendicectomy is superior to open surgery for complicated appendicitis
Surgical Endoscopy Mar 17, 2019
Quah GS, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from three randomized controlled trials (RCT) and 30 case–control studies (CCS) on 6428 patients [open appendicectomy (OA) 3,254, laparoscopic appendicectomy (LA) 3,174] to compare the outcomes of LA vs OA for complicated appendicitis. As per outcomes, LA leads to intra-abdominal abscesses (IAA) incidence similar to OA in patients with complicated appendicitis but with significantly lower morbidity, mortality and length of hospital stay. Conversion to open surgery is not indicated in correlation to the finding of complicated appendicitis at laparoscopy. These outcomes favor performing LA in these patients.
