Kissing may be an important and neglected risk factor for oropharyngeal gonorrhoea: A cross-sectional study in men who have sex with men

Sexually Transmitted Infections May 17, 2019

Chow EPF, et al. - Among gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (MSM), researchers examined how kissing is linked with oropharyngeal gonorrhea. A total of 3,677 MSM who attended a public sexual health center in Melbourne, Australia, between March 2016 and February 2017, completed the survey and were tested for oropharyngeal gonorrhea. Observations revealed that men with ≥4 kissing-only partners had adjusted odds of 1.46-fold for having oropharyngeal gonorrhea and men with ≥4 kissing-with-sex partners had 1.81-fold odds. Kissing is thereby suggested to be associated with transmission of oropharyngeal gonorrhea in MSM, irrespective of whether sex also occurs.
