Keratoplasty for keratoconus in young patients: Demographics, clinical features and post-transplant outcomes
American Journal of Ophthalmology Feb 14, 2021
Wajnsztajn D, et al. - In this retrospective cohort (national registry) study, researchers sought to investigate pre-transplant findings and outcomes of corneal transplants for keratoconus in children. Data for all patients 16 years of age or younger (n = 170) who had their first keratoconus transplant between 2003 and 2018 in all corneal transplant centers in the UK were compared with adult patients 17 years of age and older (n = 7,191). Young patients with keratoconus have impressive transplant outcomes and visual outcomes similar to adults. Overall, with advancing age, the hazard of rejection was found to decrease. However, there is no evidence of an outcome benefit in delaying transplantation until adulthood in this large population of young patients with keratoconus and poor vision.
