Is the Caprini Score predictive of venothromboembolism events in orthopaedic fracture patients?
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma May 31, 2019
Dashe J, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study involving 848 patients (18–93 years of age) with an average body mass index of 29, researchers explored the validity of the Caprini Score in orthopaedic patients with lower-extremity fractures. Patients were stratified into two groups: high-risk (pelvic and acetabular fractures) and low-risk groups (isolated foot and ankle fractures). The low-risk group found a significant lower venothromboembolism (VTE) rate, but the Caprini prediction model was not significantly different between the two groups. This shows that patient factors play a major role independent of the type of injury in the development of VTE events. The Caprini Score may help to identify patients who may need increased protection.
