Iron metabolism and type 2 diabetes mellitus: A meta‐analysis and systematic review
Journal of Diabetes Investigation May 07, 2020
Liu J, Li Q, Yang Y, et al. - Via searching the databases PubMed and Embase, researchers intended to determine if there is a connection between serum iron metabolism indicators (iron, ferritin, transferrin, hepcidin and soluble transferrin receptor) and type 2 diabetes. In total, 12 case–control and cohort studies have been analyzed. Of the 12 studies, 11 illustrated the association between serum ferritin levels and type 2 diabetes. According to this meta‐analysis and systematic review, one of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes was elevated serum ferritin, and the soluble transfer receptor-to-ferritin ratio was inversely linked to the risk of type 2 diabetes. Findings suggested that serum transferrin and hepcidin could be directly or indirectly linked to the development of diabetes.
