Interobserver reliability of histopathological features for distinguishing between cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa and superficial thrombophlebitis
Histopathology Jun 15, 2018
Hutachuda P, et al. - Researchers examined the interobserver reliability of histopathological features in differentiation between cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (cPAN) and superficial thrombophlebitis (ST) by assessment of inter-rater agreement of five histological features. They evaluated all sections of cPAN and ST independently by three experienced pathologists and one resident of pathology. Using the kappa coefficient, agreement analysis was performed. Findings revealed that these aforementioned histopathological features were helpful in differentiation between cPAN and ST. They reported that the Verhoeff–van Gieson (VVG) elastic stain was an important histochemical study for differentiating between cPAN and ST, especially in cases with extensive inflammation and necrosis.
