International trends in hepatocellular carcinoma incidence, 1978–2012
International Journal of Cancer Nov 19, 2019
Petrick JL, Florio AA, Znaor A, et al. - Using population-based cancer registry data, researchers sought to delineate the recent international trends of primary liver cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence. As per the analysis, Asian countries continuously exhibited the highest rates of liver cancer; this was particularly noted in the East and South-East, and Italy. However, recent years showed a decrease in the rates in these high-risk countries. Rising rates are recorded in India and in most countries of Europe, the Americas, and Oceania. Given a continued decline in the population seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus, a decrease in the rates of HCC in many high-risk countries is anticipated. In some high-rate, as well as low-rate, countries, the treatment of hepatitis C virus is likely to bring down rates further with access to effective therapies. However, the growing obesity and diabetes epidemics may reverse such gains in the control of liver cancer, implying diabetes treatment and primary prevention of obesity will be key in reducing liver cancer in the longer-term.
