Intensive blood pressure treatment reduced stroke risk in patients with albuminuria in the SPRINT trial
Stroke Oct 31, 2019
Leitão L, et al. - Since albuminuria was correlated with stroke risk in people with diabetes, researchers conducted a post hoc analysis of the SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial) to explore the connection between albuminuria and incident stroke in nondiabetic individuals. Among 8,913 participants (mean age was 68 ± 9 years) without diabetes, the effect of higher vs lower intensity blood pressure management on mortality was analyzed. In 129 people during follow-up, incident stroke occurred. The authors discovered that baseline albuminuria (vs not) was correlated with a higher risk of incident stroke, but this association seemed to be limited to those in the standard treatment arm. Further studies are needed to determine whether reducing albuminuria in itself is beneficial in reducing the risk of strokes.
