Influence of HIV infection on the natural history of hepatocellular carcinoma: Results from a global multicohort study
Journal of Clinical Oncology Feb 07, 2019
Pinato DJ, et al. - Researchers investigated the influence of HIV seropositivity on the overall survival (OS) of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this international multicohort study of patients with HCC from four continents who did not receive any anticancer treatment, they recruited a total of 1,588 patients; 132 of them were HIV positive. At HCC diagnosis, most patients who were HIV-positive had been on antiretrovirals for a median of 8.3 years. Results revealed HIV seropositivity was associated with lower survival in HCC, despite satisfactory antiretroviral treatment. This was noted irrespective of stage, anticancer treatment, and geographical origin.
