Increased risk of cardiovascular mortality by strict glycemic control (preprocedural HbA1c < 6.5%) in Japanese medically-treated diabetic patients following percutaneous coronary intervention: A 10-year follow-up study
Cardiovascular Diabetology Feb 27, 2020
Funamizu T, Iwata H, Nishida Y, et al. - In Japanese diabetic patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), researchers intended to determine if there is an association between preprocedural HbA1c level and cardiovascular (CV) mortality. This retrospective observational study used a single-center prospective PCI database to involve consecutive 4,542 patients who had PCI between 2000 and 2016. Participants in the study were 1,328 patients with any antidiabetic medication including insulin at PCI. CV and sudden death occurred in 81 and 23 patients, respectively, in the follow-up period. The outcomes show an increased risk of CV mortality through strict glycemic control (HbA1c < 6.5%) in the secondary prevention of CV disease in Japanese individuals with medically-treated diabetes.
