Increased cardiovascular response to a 6-minute walk test in people with type 2 diabetes
Diabetes Spectrum Feb 19, 2020
Senefeld JW, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to contrast performance and cardiovascular (CV) response during a 6-minute walk test (6MWT) between people with T2D and matched control individuals. CV response and distance walked during the 6MWT were evaluated in 30 people with T2D, matched for age, body composition, physical activity, and estimated aerobic capacity with 34 control individuals. While people with T2D had similar performance and ratings of perceived exertion during the 6MWT vs control subjects, the CV response was greater for people with T2D, showing greater cardiac effort for similar perceived effort and 6MWT performance. Such data suggest that exercise intensity observation and prescription will cover both perceived effort and CV response.
