Income level and inequality as complement to geographical differences in cardiovascular trials
American Heart Journal Sep 08, 2019
PedroFerreira J, Rossignol P, Dewan P, et al. - Researchers examined how country per capita income and income-inequality are associated with prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF) or an acute coronary syndrome in three international trials (EMPHASIS-HF, EPHESUS, and EXAMINE). From low-middle income countries and from countries with higher inequality, patients were younger, less often white, had fewer co-morbid conditions, and were less often treated with guideline-recommended therapies, including devices. Mortality rates were highest among these patients. They noted a substantial prognostic impact of income and inequality and hence they recommend considering these when looking into subgroup differences in cardiovascular trials.
