Incisional negative pressure wound therapy devices improve short term wound complications, but not long term infection rate following hip and knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 20, 2018
Keeney JA, et al. - In this prospective randomized controlled trial (RCT), experts evaluated the effect of incisional negative pressure wound therapy (iNPWT) on wound appearance, early complications and late infection rates following hip and knee total joint arthroplasty (TJA) compared with a standard surgical dressing. They randomized 398 patients undergoing primary or revision lower extremity TJA into iNPWT or conventional wound dressing groups. Improved soft tissue healing response with the use of iNPWT devices is supported in the findings. While, they noted the probability of postoperative wound drainage to limit their value following THA, incisional NPWT devices may have a targeted benefit for elective TKA patients with a BMI > 35 kg/m2.
