Incidence, risk factors and outcome of young patients with myocardial infarction
Heart Mar 08, 2020
Jortveit J, et al. - Researchers conducted this nationwide study to evaluate the current incidence, risk factors and outcome of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients < 45 years of age. In this observational, nationwide cohort study, all patients ≤ 80 years of age registered in the Norwegian Myocardial Infarction Register in 2013–2016 were involved. Among a total of 33,439 individuals ≤ 80 years with AMI, 1,468 were < 45 years old. Data reported that AMI incidence was 2.1 per 100,000 person-years in people aged 20–29 years, 16.9 in people aged 30–39 years and 97.6 in people aged 40–49 years. In Norway, the AMI rate was low in people < 45 years of age but almost one in ten AMI patients < 45 years of age died or experienced a new cardiovascular event during follow-up. Increased efforts are needed to improve the management of risk factors in these patients.
