Incidence, risk factors, and clinical implications of postoperative hematoma requiring reoperation following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion
Spine Apr 03, 2019
Bovonratwet P, et al. - Investigators studied the data to examine the incidence, timing, risk factors, and clinical indications of postoperative hematoma necessitating reoperation after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). They observed the development of hematoma requiring reoperation in 148 cases among subjects with 37,261 ACDF. Approximately 38% of 148 cases were recorded with complications after discharge. They reported following risk factors for the development of hematoma requiring reoperation: lower BMI, multilevel procedures, preoperative international normalized ratio >1.2, American Society of Anesthesiologists classification ≥3, preoperative anemia, and male sex. Higher risk for subsequent ventilator requirement, deep wound infection, pneumonia, and reintubation was noted in cases who developed a hematoma requiring reoperation.
