Incidence, predictors, and in-hospital outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve implantation after non-elective admission in comparison with elective admission: From the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database
The American Journal of Cardiology Oct 02, 2018
Ando T, et al. - Researchers used the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database to determine the frequency, predictors, and outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) after non-elective admission. They identified hospitalization in those aged ≥ 50 years who had trans-arterial TAVI, and created a propensity-matched cohort to compare the outcomes between non-elective and elective admission. A total of 9,521 TAVI admissions were identified, among which 22.2% of were non-elective. Identified independent risk factors for non-elective admission were pulmonary circulation disorders, anemia, congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and atrial fibrillation. Higher adverse outcomes and increased health resource utilization were observed in cases with non-elective TAVI. Findings suggested that better outcomes might be achieved with the expedition in TAVI process in high-risk cohorts.
