Incidence of sleep apnea and association with atrial fibrillation in an unselected pacemaker population: Results from the observational RESPIRE study
Heart Rhythm Sep 09, 2019
Marti-Almor J, Marques P, Jesel L, et al. - In an unselected pacemaker population, researchers assessed the incidence and severity of sleep apnea (SA), as well as its link with atrial fibrillation (AF). In a multicenter, international, observational, open-label study, the RESPIRE (REgistry of Sleep APnea monItoring and Atrial Fibrillation in pacemakeR patiEnts), adults were observed for 18 months following implant with a sleep apnea monitoring-enabled dual-chamber pacemaker. Between individuals with severe vs non-severe SA, the difference in the significant AF (cumulative AF episodes lasting ≥ 24 hours over 2 consecutive days) at 12 months in the full analysis set (n = 553) was considered as the first co-primary endpoint. Severe SA was detected in nearly one-third of unselected pacemaker patients via SA screening over 12 months. A higher incidence of significant AF was reported in relation to severe SA.
