Incidence, characteristics, predictors, and outcomes of surgical explantation after transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Oct 15, 2020
Hirji SA, Percy ED, McGurk S, et al. - Researchers utilized a population-based, nationally representative database to determine the incidence, patient features, predictors, as well as results of surgical explantation following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The Medicare Provider profile was examined to incorporate all U.S. patients receiving TAVR from 2012 to 2017. The incidence of surgical explantation was estimated to be 0.2%, and was identified to be 0.28% and 0.14% in the early and newer TAVR era, respectively. In this analysis offering updated evidence on the incidence, timing, as well as results of surgical explantation of a TAVR prosthesis, findings revealed low overall incidence but a high short-term mortality. These data emphasize the significance of future mechanistic investigations on TAVR explantation and may hold implications on lifetime management of aortic stenosis, especially in younger patients.
