Incidence and risk factors for meniscal cyst after meniscal repair
Arthroscopy Mar 17, 2019
Nishino K, et al. - Investigators reviewed 102 menisci in 96 knees to examine the incidence of magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed cyst formation after meniscal repair and also to analyze the associated risk factors for a mean follow-up period was 3.8 years. They found significant differences among groups concerning the number of medial, lateral, and discoid tears; concomitant anterior cruciate ligament tears; Tegner scale; and suture number at demographic level. They found the development of meniscal cysts in 14 cases whereas 2 of those 14 cysts were symptomatic, needing open cystectomy. They concluded 1.7% to 40.0% incidence of meniscal cysts after the arthroscopic meniscal repair, depending on the surgical method. Hence, they suggested medial meniscus tears and application of an all-inside (AI) technique as the risk factors for cyst formation.
