Incidence and recurrence rate of postpartum hemorrhage and manual removal of the placenta: A longitudinal linked national cohort study in the Netherlands

European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Jun 18, 2019

Ruiter L, et al. - Via a retrospective national cohort study consisting of 359,737 women with two consecutive singleton deliveries, the researchers hypothesized to understand the dependence of risk of recurrence on the gestational age at first birth and to determine the necessity of manual removal of the placenta. In women with a history of postpartum hemorrhage, the risk of postpartum hemorrhage in a subsequent pregnancy was significantly higher in comparison with women without a previous postpartum hemorrhage. The magnitude of the risk was noted highest in women with a manual removal of the placenta in the first pregnancy between 32 and 37 weeks.
