Incidence and outcomes of early percutaneous coronary intervention after isolated valve surgery
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Mar 17, 2019
Alqahtani F, et al. - Among patients who had isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR), isolated mitral valve repair (MVr) or replacement (MVR), the incidence, predictors and outcomes of early percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) post-surgery were assessed by using a national inpatient sample. Comparisons were performed between those who had early postoperative PCI vs those who did not. PCI was performed in 1,074 (0.8%) of 135,611 included patients before discharge. A rare occurrence of early PCI following isolated aortic or mitral valve surgery was reported, but substantial in-hospital morbidity, mortality, and cost were reported in relation to it. Higher incidences of stroke, acute kidney injury, infectious complications, higher hospital charges, and longer hospitalizations were seen among patients undergoing PCI. The necessity of early postoperative PCI was independently predicted by age, robotic-assisted surgery, and chronic renal failure.
