Incidence and impact of thrombocytopenia in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stents
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 08, 2020
Park S, Ahn JM, Kim TO, et al. - Using the IRIS-DES registry, researchers investigated the incidence as well as the prognostic effect of thrombocytopenia on clinical results in patients receiving percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES). Depending on the presence of thrombocytopenia (platelet count <150 × 109/L) at baseline, patients were categorized into 2 groups. All-cause mortality (primary outcome) as well as the composite outcome of death, myocardial infarction, and stroke, and major bleeding (secondary outcomes) was assessed. As per findings, thrombocytopenia incidence in patients who received PCI with DES was estimated to be 6.9%. Baseline thrombocytopenia was found to be significantly related to raised risks of death and major bleeding.
