In search of an efficient strategy to monitor disease status of chronic heart failure outpatients: Added value of blood biomarkers to clinical assessment

van Boven N, et al. - There is a lack of studies correlating repeated measurements of blood biomarkers in chronic heart failure (CHF) with repeatedly assessed New York Heart Association (NYHA) class over a prolonged follow-up period, and concomitantly exploring their links with clinical endpoints. In this current study, the independent association of temporal N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic (NT-proBNP), C-reactive protein (CRP) and NYHA class patterns with adverse clinical outcome was demonstrated. Findings also revealed that as monitoring tools for CHF outpatients, serially measured NT-proBNP and NYHA class suited the best.
