In-hospital outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve implantation in patients with vs without chronic thrombocytopenia
The American Journal of Cardiology Jul 20, 2019
Saad M, et al. - The National Inpatient Sample was evaluated and propensity score matching was conducted by experts in order to assess the prevalence and impact of chronic thrombocytopenia (cTCP) on in-hospital clinical outcomes following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The main result was in-hospital mortality in subjects with as compared to those without cTCP. A total of 7,105 (18.3%) out of 38,855 TAVI hospitalizations, had a diagnosis of cTCP. Although cTCP was correlated with a greater risk of acute kidney injury, vascular complications, perioperative blood product transfusion, cardiac tamponade, cardiogenic shock, and use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, in-hospital mortality was alike among both groups. Hence, in cases that had undergone TAVI, cTCP was often observed and was correlated with worse post-procedure clinical outcomes, however, with alike in-hospital mortality.
