Improved survival with radiotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma with major vascular invasion: A propensity-matched analysis of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database
Cancer Medicine Mar 20, 2019
Lin Q, et al. - Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, researchers assessed the survival benefit of radiotherapy (RT) in 3181 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with major vascular invasion. They compared 308 patients who underwent RT and 2873 who did not receive RT. They also performed analysis using propensity score matching (PSM). Longer median survival time was observed in radiation-treated group vs in the control group (7 months vs 3 months) in the overall sample. The median survival time was 3 months longer vs the control group (7 months vs 4 months) in a PSM cohort. In HCC patients with major vascular invasion, improved survival was achieved with RT, this survival benefit was particularly reported for treatemnt of tumor(s) confined to one lobe and not on surface of liver.
