Improved diagnosis of active Schistosoma infection in travellers and migrants using the ultra-sensitive in-house lateral flow test for detection of circulating anodic antigen (CAA) in serum
European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases Jul 12, 2018
van Grootveld R, et al. - Researchers determined the diagnostic value of the up-converting phosphor (UCP)-lateral flow (LF) CAA assay for diagnosing low-grade active Schistosoma infections in a non-endemic setting. They determined CAA concentrations in 111 serum samples originating from 81 serology-positive individuals. Migrants vs travelers displayed higher serum CAA levels, and a sharp drop in CAA concentrations was observed when testing follow-up samples after treatment. Findings thereby highlight the potential of the serum UCP-LF CAA assay to be a useful tool for the diagnosis of an active Schistosoma infection in a non-endemic setting.
