Implant-related sepsis in lower limb fractures following gunshot injuries in the civilian population: A systematic review

Graham SM, et al. - The relationship of implant-related sepsis in fractures secondary to gunshot wounds (GSWs) was addressed in this systematic review. Researchers identified a total of 14 studies that met the inclusion criteria set. Literature suggested a low risk of superficial and deep infection, with no obvious risk of osteomyelitis, in relation to low and high-velocity injuries managed with internal fixation, such as intramedullary nails. However, as all studies poorly defined infection and used no validated scoring system for infection, it seemed difficult to either confirm or refute that for these complex injuries, internal fixation is the ideal method of management
