Impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on cost‐related medication underuse in nonelderly adult cancer survivors

Barnes JM, Johnson KJ, Boakye EA, et al. - Researchers utilized National Health Interview Survey data (2011‐2017) to quantify how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) could influence cost‐related medication underuse (CRMU), a measure of access to care and financial burden, among nonelderly cancer survivors. Data were used for 6,176 cancer survivors aged 18 to 64 years and 4,100 aged 65 to 74 years. For cancer survivors aged 18 to 64 years with income < 250% of the federal poverty level (FPL), vs those with income > 400% of the FPL, an 8.33‐percentage point (PP) reduction in CRMU was revealed in difference‐in‐differences analyses. Experts noted a decrease for cancer survivors aged 55 to 64 years vs those aged 65 to 74 years with income < 400% of the FPL. Overall, in low‐income, nonelderly cancer survivors, an ACA‐related decrease in CRMU was observed. In this vulnerable group, enhanced health care access and affordability may be ensured via ACA.
