Impact of obesity on operative treatment and inpatient outcomes of paediatric limb fractures
The Bone & Joint Journal Apr 04, 2019
Li NY, et al. - Using the Kids’ Inpatient Database (KID), researchers determined the influence of obesity on the operative management and inpatient outcomes of paediatric limb fractures. They noted significantly increased rates of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) among obese pediatric patients. A significant association was also observed between older age and ORIF for all fractures. Obese patients following ORIF for upper and lower limb fractures had significantly increased lengths of stay, hospital charges, and complications. Obese pediatric fracture patients and their families could be informed using these findings regarding the increased risk for open operative fixation and associated outcomes.
