Impact of frailty on mortality, readmissions and resource utilization after TAVI
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 29, 2020
Malik AH, Yandrapalli S, Zaid S, et al. - Researchers utilized the 2016 Nationwide readmission database and investigated how frailty influences hospital readmissions rates following transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI). Individuals who had TAVI were grouped as low, intermediate, and high frailty status. Six-months readmission rates across the 3 frailty groups were assessed as the primary outcome. Reasons for readmissions, in-hospital death and cost of care were the secondary outcomes. Findings revealed the link of an increasing frailty with significantly worse post-procedure mortality, readmissions as well as associated mortality. Across frailty groups, while cardiac causes (mostly heart failure) were documented as the main readmission etiologies, rates of infectious and injury-associated readmissions were shown to be increased.
