Impact of excessive weight gain on cardiovascular outcomes in type 1 diabetes: Results from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) Study
Diabetes Care Nov 18, 2017
Purnell JQ, et al. - Researchers here explored whether excessive weight gain from Intensive treatment (INT) of type 1 diabetes is independently associated with subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. For the first 13 years after Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), INT vs conventional treatment (CONV) for type 1 diabetes reduced macrovascular events, even when excessive weight gain occurred. After this, a significant increase in total CVD events was observed in the Quartiles 4 INT group, becoming equivalent to those in the CONV group. They realized the necessity for longer follow-up to assess whether this trend continues and results in more major CVD events.
