Impact of detrusor underactivity on the postoperative outcomes after benign prostatic enlargement surgery
Neurourology and Urodynamics Mar 08, 2021
Plata M, Santander J, Trujillo CG, et al. - This study was undertaken to ascertain the variations in functional outcomes of patients with or without DUA who underwent photovaporization of the prostate (PVP) with GreenLight ™ 180 W XPS. Between 2012 and 2019, researchers examined a cohort of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) who had undergone PVP. Individuals were classified according to the bladder contractility index (BCI). DUA was characterized as BCI < 100. They evaluated a total of 271 patients who had undergone PVP with GreenLight ™ and met the inclusion criteria. The findings revealed that individuals with LUTS, regardless of their BCI, improved their symptoms after PVP according to the IPSS. This study’s data demonstrate that patients with DUA were more likely not to improve their QoL after the procedure and had a higher chance of failure to void in the immediate postoperative period. The results considered that an appropriate counseling process with the patient discussing possible outcomes based on these findings should be encouraged.
