Impact of change in head and neck position on ultrasound localisation of the cricothyroid membrane: An observational study
Anaesthesia Oct 05, 2018
Dixit A, et al. - Researchers investigated if skin marks made over the center of the cricothyroid membrane with the head and neck in the neutral position moved outside the boundaries of the membrane when the neck was subsequently extended in preparation for surgical cricothyroidotomy. Additionally, changes in the height of the cricothyroid membrane between the neutral and extended positions were also assessed. They observed that, in 12 of 22 subjects, initial skin mark moved to outside the boundary of the cricothyroid membrane after extending the neck. With the neck extended, an increase by 30% was evident in the height of the cricothyroid membrane. In preparation for cricothyroidotomy, marking the skin with the neck extended, not with the head and neck in the neutral position, was recommended.
