Impact of baseline cigarette smoking status on clinical outcome after transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Mar 28, 2019
Abawi M, et al. -Researchers queried consecutive patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) at two high volume Dutch centers, to investigate smoking prevalence in these patients and to examine how it is associated with clinical and mortality outcome in these patients. Among a total of 913 consecutive patients (80.1 ± 7.6 years; logistic EuroSCORE: 16.5 ± 9.9%), 47% (n = 432) were males, 57% (n = 522) were never-smokers, 35% (n = 317) were prior-smokers, and 8% (n = 74) were current smokers. In general, 1-year mortality outcome following TAVR in baseline prior-smokers was comparable to that seen for baseline never-smokers. However, males showed a reversed correlation between baseline prior-smoking status and 1-year mortality after TAVR. This could partially be related to favorable baseline characteristics.
