Identifying risk factors for the development of sepsis during adult severe malaria

Malaria Journal Aug 07, 2018

Njim T, et al. - A prognostic model to identify patients at higher risk of developing bacterial sepsis among those admitted with severe malaria was developed via a retrospective data analysis using trial data from the South East Asian Quinine Artesunate Malaria Trial. As per findings, clinical sepsis developed in 86 (7.3%) of 1.187 adults with severe malaria during admission. Female sex, high blood urea nitrogen, high plasma anion gap, respiratory distress, shock on admission, high parasitaemia, coma, and jaundice were identified as predictors for developing sepsis. The multivariable logistic regression model, developed including these predictors, could identify patients with severe malaria at risk of developing clinical sepsis, potentially benefiting from antibiotic treatment in addition to antimalarials.
